The Foothill SELPA Community Advisory Committee presents a parent conference called "Celebrating Differences: The Unexpected Gifts of Divesity" on Saturday, May 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at John Burroughs High School. Norman Kunc will be the guest presenter with additional presentations given by Team of Advocates for Special Kids, Protection and Advocacy, Education Spectrum, Pacific Clinics, and California State University, Northridge. The Center for Self-Determination is presenting the International Conference on Self-Determination, May 27 to 29, 2008 in Detroit, Michigan at the Renaissance Center along the Detroit River separating Canada and the United States. International perspectives on progressive notions of mental health recovery, family supports, community membership, ending forced impoverishment and system change requirements will be part of the focus of the conference. The meetings will feature leaders from across disability and aging and relate the efforts being made across the world to make freedom a reality for individuals with disabilities. This conference is dedicated to laying a foundation across disability and aging for moving publicly funded systems of support/care from the paternalism of the past to true equality in the future. Strategies presents "Supporting Father Involvement (SFI) - Evidenced-based Services to Strengthen Children and Families" on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Magnolia Place Conference Center at the Children's Bureau. The event will include an introduction and orientation to SFI, a discussion of barriers and bridges to involving fathers, what agencies can do right now to strengthen efforts to serve families, and the next steps for SFI participation and implementation. Glendale Community College Parent Education Classes The Parent Education Program at Glendale Community College has been in operation for over 45 years offering 20 or more classes for parents and their preschoolers. There are classes for parents and their newborns, older infants, toddlers, 2s, 3s, 4s, as well as multi-age classes where parents bring more than one preschooler. Evening and daytime classes are available, and each class is instructed by a qualified parent education/early childhood teacher and assistant. Young-Nak Special Program - Computer Class Young-Nak Special Program is now offering a computer class every Saturday from 2 p.m .to 5:30 p.m. at the Young-Nak Church Grace Hall located at 152 North Avenue 18, Los Angeles, CA 90031. The program is for anyone with a developmental disability between the ages of 5 and 18. The qualifications to participate include having a developmental disability, being committed for 15 weeks, and having your own transportation. Participants will learn the basics of computer use, including typing, drawing, math and english.
