Regularly Offered Training Opportunities

The following are training opportunities that focus on developmental disabilities and related topics and are conducted or sponsored by Lanterman Regional Center for family members in the Lanterman community.

Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) Users Group
This is a monthly opportunity for users of AAC devices to socialize with other AAC users and learn some additional applications of their device, such as e-mailing and using the telephone.

Behavioral Services Orientation
Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center (FDLRC) Orientation to Behavioral Services is a one-time, one-hour presentation developed to provide parents and caregivers of regional center clients with information on what types of behavioral services are provided through FDLRC. The orientation is a mandatory first step for any family considering behavioral services.

Behavior Management Workshops in English and Spanish
These multi-session workshops are intended to teach parents and caregivers basic principles of behavior change and practical application of these principles in their everyday life. They also provide a supportive environment for families who share similar experiences. Parents must complete the “Behavioral Services Orientation" prior to registering for Behavior Management Workshops. Completion of these workshops is mandatory for families requesting in-home behavioral services.

Behavior Management Workshops in Korean and Armenian
These multi-session workshops are intended to teach parents and caregivers the basic principles of behavior change and practical application of these principles in their everyday life. They also provide a supportive environment for families who share similar experiences. Parents must complete the “Behavioral Services Orientation" prior to registering for Behavior Management Workshops. Completion of these workshops is mandatory for families requesting in-home behavioral services.

Conservatorship, Special Needs Trusts and Wills
Available in English and Spanish, this training helps families plan for the future, and covers the following topics: conservatorship, special needs trusts, and wills.

IEP and Inclusion
Available in English and Spanish, this training talks about the IEP process, special education and inclusion, and is for families with school-age children.

IEP, Inclusion and Transition to Preschool
Available in English and Spanish, this training is for families with children two to three years of age.

Navigating the Special Needs System - Service Coordination and Advocacy Training (SCAT)
This training course is designed especially for Lanterman families to better enable them to advocate for and assist their family member with a developmental disability.

New Paths
New Paths offers a comfortable and supportive environment where you can share the joys and concerns of caring for a child with a disability, as well as learn from others walking the same road as you.

Parenting the Child with Special Needs
This eight-week workshop training series called “Promoting Intellectual and Emotional Growth in Children with Special Needs” is designed to provide responsive, educational, teaching and behavioral skills to parents and caregivers of children birth to 5 years old, with special needs.

Parenting Series: Sexuality and Youth with Developmental Disabilities
Designed to educate parents and provide strategies to assist them in developing positive communication about sexuality and reproductive health with their children with developmental disabilities.

Pathways Beyond Grief
The Pathways Beyond Grief groups offer parents a comfortable and supportive environment where they can explore and acknowledge feelings such as sadness, anger, guilt or other feelings that can accompany the day-to-day stress they encounter.

Toilet Training Workshops
Toilet Training enables parents to learn a systematic approach to toilet training, identifying readiness, developing a specific task analysis for their child, and utilizing principles of behavior modification to increase toileting behavior and motivation.

Additional Training
In addition to the regularly offered training listed above, Lanterman offers a variety of other training and workshops throughout the year.
