October 2: TCM Begins Month-long Examination of Hollywood’s Depiction of People with DisabilitiesTurner Classic Movies (TCM) will dedicate the month of October to exploring the ways people with disabilities have been portrayed in film. On behalf of Inclusion in the Arts, Lawrence Carter-Long will join TCM host Robert Osborne for The Projected Image: A History of Disability in Film. The special month-long exploration will air Tuesdays in October, beginning October 2 at 8 p.m. (ET). |

California Secretary of State Launches New Online Voter Registration Application ProcessSecretary of State Debra Bowen has launched the new California Online Voter Registration (COVR) application process. Anyone who is eligible to register to vote in California can submit an electronic voter registration application by going to www.sos.ca.gov/elections/register-to-vote or www.registertovote.ca.gov. For more information about how the online voter registration process works refer to the Secretary of State's frequently asked questions (FAQ) document at www.sos.ca.gov/elections/elections_faq.htm for answers to some of the most common questions people ask about applying to register to vote online. |

Simply visit lanterman.org and click on “Subscribe” to provide us with your e-mail address. You will automatically be signed up to receive e-mail bulletins about information related to Lanterman Regional Center’s general activities and events. You can also sign up for bulletins about a specific topic, such as legislative issues, or bulletins specific to a certain age, disability or area, by providing us with additional information. No information collected will be given to anyone outside of Lanterman; it’s just for the purpose of sending targeted e-mails to the Lanterman community. There are many events, including valuable trainings and workshops, we at the Center hear about, but due to limited financial resources, we cannot mail flyers for each of these events. By subscribing to the e-mail bulletins, you too will be able to hear about them and be informed about what’s going on in the Lanterman community. |

October 10: Unity Day is Celebrated; Part of National Bullying Prevention Month Events "The End of Bullying Begins with Me" is the message during PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Month in October. It’s a time when communities can unite nationwide to raise awareness of bullying prevention through events, activities, outreach and education. PACER created the campaign in 2006 with a one-week event which has now evolved into a month-long effort that encourages everyone to take an active role in the bullying prevention movement. Resources from PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center make it easy to take action. Check out the resources online at www.pacer.org/bullying. Also, be sure to wear orange on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 for Unity Day - "Make it Orange and Make it End." If you care about students who are bullied and want bullying to end, make your color orange on Unity Day. That’s the day everyone can link together - in schools, communities and online - and send one large, orange message of support to students who have experienced bullying. In 2011, Ellen DeGeneres promoted the cause on television by wearing orange and reminding millions of viewers about the importance of bullying prevention. Facebook supports the cause during October by providing users with information on PACER activities on its safety, educator, and privacy pages. October 11: Transitioning from High School Using Assistive Technology Webinar The third workshop in the 2012 Assistive Technology Workshop Series hosted by Lanterman Regional Center and ATEC will feature representatives from local public and private agencies. They will discuss the continuation of AT services beyond high school. Panelists will be present to discuss their agencies’ responsibilities and services regarding AT in the transition process. The one-hour webinar workshop is scheduled for Thursday, October 11, 2012, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., and will provide anyone interested in learning more about assistive technology and transition from high school, including people who use AT (ages 14-22 years old), parents, caregivers, case managers, family members, therapists, educators, and professionals who support transitioning students, with greater knowledge and resources. The workshop will be presented via webinar and in-person at Lanterman Regional Center. October 12: Baby Play Days for Children Birth to Two Years of Age Come and join the Koch-Young Resource Center and Pasadena Child Development Associates for a monthly play day for children birth to two years of age and their parents. Enjoy access to KYRC toys and play equipment, while getting to know other families. October 18: Building Speech Skills ~ Strategies for Parents to Improve a Child’s Speech & Language Lanterman's Koch-Young Resource Center and Pasadena Child Development Associates present a two-hour workshop for parents to learn how to promote their child’s speech skills. Gain ideas you can incorporate in daily life and playtime with your child who is between the ages of birth to 5. Learn how to build off of your child’s interests and your family’s regular routine to motivate and support your child in finding his or her voice. The workshop is scheduled for Thursday, October 18, 2012 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Lanterman Regional Center.
