The Roberta Happe Memorial Internship
At Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center, our mission flows from a set of core values – one of the most important of which is spirit.

Lanterman is marked by the special spirit and heart of our people: a passion for caring and commitment that gives our work its true life. A prevailing culture of willingness and a readiness to volunteer characterizes the people of Lanterman.

Few individuals have so exemplified this spirit as Roberta Happe. In her all-too-brief time at Lanterman, she showed us all how to live this core value to its fullest. In celebration of, and in tribute to her life, we have established the Roberta Happe Memorial Internship.

Stretching Tradition
Traditionally, people who work at the regional center come from majors such as social work, education or psychology. A 1999 graduate of the University of Southern California with a degree in business, Happe demonstrated to us all that a motivated person can make a remarkable contribution to an organization, even if he or she does not come with what is considered a "typical" degree.

The Happe Internship provides opportunities for students of promise from non-traditional majors to gain knowledge and experience in the work we do as a Lanterman community.

Learn and Apply Marketable Skills
You’ll be challenged to think and work across disciplines as you hone classroom learning into marketable skills. You’ll have the opportunity to:

• Enhance writing, research, interview and organizational skills
• Increase teamwork and problem-solving skills
• Design and implement research protocols
• Assess needs and develop new programs
• Enrich computer and Internet skills
• Learn how to effectively connect people with resources
• Create innovative solutions to problems
• Develop knowledge and understanding of the field of developmental disabilities, and the needs of children and adults with disabilities

Interesting Opportunities
We’re looking for people who are willing to take on interesting challenges and explore new ideas. You provide the enthusiasm and we’ll provide the training to get you started. Past Roberta Happe interns have been involved in a number of projects from assisting visitors to Lanterman’s Koch-Young Resource Center, to researching resources for our Network of Care, developing information science skills by working in our library, and being a part of our Assistive Technology Project. Interns have also been involved in several health-related projects with our Clinical Services department and with our training department.

We regularly develop and implement new projects to enhance the lives of the individuals with developmental disabilities that we serve and their families.
