Lanterman's Board of Directors

Lanterman is a private, non-profit organization that has a contract with the state of California to provide services for people with developmental disabilities, and we serve a specific geographic area. But we’re not a state agency – we’re something unique - a local organization run by a board of directors whose members are people from the community, and include individuals with developmental disabilities, family members, local leaders and professionals.

The board’s most important job is to make sure that the Regional Center is conducting business in a way that fulfills the promise of the Lanterman Act: That people with developmental disabilities have the same rights and responsibilities as all other individuals, and that they should participate in the community in every way possible.

The board of directors has a number of key functions and responsibilities including:

  • Ensuring the Center complies with its contract
  • Developing policy and service standards
  • Monitoring policy
  • Hiring and evaluating the executive director
  • Developing our strategic direction and goals including long-range planning
  • Raising public awareness of who we are and what we do

Board members are responsible for looking at, and balancing the needs of our entire community. They help people understand and support the work of the Regional Center on behalf of our community members with developmental disabilities, and influence people to make better laws to improve the service delivery system.
